Participants of the meeting will examine ancient fonts, textbooks, philosophical works, and books from renowned collections. The meeting will take place in the rare book hall. Participants will get acquainted with editions that are usually perceived as museum rarities, but this time will become part of a conversation about the culture of reading, printing, and private collections. Guests will learn about the book collection of RGBM and see domestic editions from the era of manual printing. Among them will be copies printed in civil and church-Slavonic fonts, as well as one of the first domestic textbooks on arithmetic. There will also be ancient books on geography, philosophy, lifetime editions of works by Alexander Pushkin, and books from the collections of the Romanov family and Count Uvarov. Additionally, guests will see pre-revolutionary translations into Russian of the works of Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Herbert Spencer, and Voltaire. Through them, one can trace how new ideas entered the Russian-speaking intellectual environment and how the reading circle of the educated society changed.
