The program is based on the novella by Prosper Mérimée and the music of Georges Bizet in the version of Rodion Shchedrin and Georgy Fedorov for string and percussion instruments. The strings can convey both lyrical softness and anxious inner trembling, while the percussion adds nerve, rhythmic elasticity, and an almost physical sense of conflict to the scenes. As a result, the Spanish images, the fateful allure of Carmen, and the tragic line of José are perceived with new intensity.
