One of the most popular productions at the Vladimir Mayakovsky Theater, which has been on stage for many years. Director Sergey Artsibashev staged the classic Gogol play back in the early 2000s, but the audience's love for it only grows. There are several reasons for this. First, of course, the absolutely star-studded cast: Svetlana Nemolyaeva as the incomparable matchmaker, Kostolevsky-Podkolessin, Mikhail Filippov as Kochkarev, and so on. Secondly, the amazing yet harmonious mixture of genres: there is the unceasing chorus of hay maidens, almost variety numbers from the candidates for husbands, and elements of mysticism when the bride divines with mirrors. Eclecticism, but very successful. And finally, the interpretation of the main role: against the backdrop of the overall vaudevillian nature of what is happening, Podkolessin appears as a mysterious, and sometimes tragic character, and his struggles seem not just like doubts of an unfortunate groom, but the eternal indecisiveness of the Russian intellectual as a whole. However, the other characters here are not as simple as they seem: behind the external comedy lies loneliness and the painful search for happiness.
