About

A monologue by Yuri Kraskov - intelligent, calm, and at the same time inventive. The director Rimas Tuminas saw the hero of the "Notes" in a new light, expressing an ironic attitude towards him. The main theme of the play became the human unfulfillment. Gogol writes about a petty official who is dissatisfied with both his position in society and his life in general; his obsession with finding some high "vocation" ultimately drives him mad, and he begins to imagine himself as the King of Spain. Intrigued by the "Notes," Vakhtangov actor Yuri Kraskov decided to bring them to the stage, and when Rimas Tuminas came to the theatre, the actor presented his play to the director. The result of their collaboration was a new production in which the image of Poprishchin was somewhat altered. According to Yuri Kraskov, the director sees arrogance and conceit in the main character. Obsessed with a delusion of grandeur, Poprishchin places himself above those around him, and gradually his condition takes on a grotesque form. He looks down on everyone and everything, imagines himself as King Ferdinand, and adopts the mannerisms of an unrecognized genius. At the center of the play, Rimas Tuminas and Yuri Kraskov placed the theme of creative and spiritual unfulfillment. But whatever the interpretation, the leitmotif of Gogol's work will always remain - an endless love for the "little man." See even more plays on our website in the theatre section.
