In the Chamber Hall of the Simonov Stage, young actors perform a play about unfulfilled love. Leonid Zorin's play is one of the most poignant stories of love in Soviet drama. The characters of the play are Hélène, a Polish girl and conservatory student, and Viktor, a Soviet young man and future winemaker. They meet at a concert in the conservatory at the end of 1946. In winter Moscow, their deep feelings are born, and the young people celebrate New Year together, with Viktor proposing to Hélène. But their plans are not meant to be: in February 1947, a decree is issued prohibiting Soviet citizens from marrying foreigners. The lovers are forced to part, seemingly forever, but they do not yet know what fate has in store for them with new meetings. Will they be able to reunite after many years?
