The protagonist, Charlie, a mentally challenged janitor at a bakery, agrees to undergo an experiment on his brain conducted by two scientists. Previously, these scientists successfully operated on the brain of a mouse named Algernon and are now ready to take on a human... Charlie is horrified but fails to shield himself from a similar reverse process - his IQ rapidly returns to its original level, even dropping slightly below it. Yet he must continue to live and face the blows he received from people before the astonishing transformation. Questions of spirituality and the integrity of a person are global issues of the confrontation between society and the individual.
