The "ideal" tragedy directed by Rimas Tuminas is a project realized by the Eugene Vakhtangov Theatre in collaboration with one of the most prestigious theatrical venues in Greece. "King Oedipus" is the result of the collaboration between the Vakhtangov Theatre and the National Theatre of Greece, one of the projects of the cross-year between Russia and Greece. The world premiere of the play based on the classic tragedy by Sophocles took place in the Epidaurus amphitheater, one of the oldest stages in the world. The production will be presented to the Russian audience on the birthday of the famous Eugene Vakhtangov Theatre, which will celebrate its 95th anniversary in 2016. The tragedy of Sophocles, which Aristotle called the ideal example of the genre, is one of the most significant texts not only for world theatre but for Western culture as a whole. Therefore, for Rimas Tuminas, as for any director, working with the immortal play became a kind of challenge, an important milestone in his creative biography. His collaborator was his Greek colleague Stafis Livafinos, the head of the National Theatre in Athens, who was the initiator of this unique project.
