About

Director Yuri Butusov staged Chekhov's play in the style of art-house cinema, a psychoanalytic session, and a poem. The performance has nothing classical about it, and all means are directed at making the audience experience a "cultural shock." The production is filled with moments of painful self-analysis and even sophisticated masochism, with a lingering desire to abandon a tedious, meaningless life that never comes to fruition. The play is indeed comparable to art-house films, as mere viewing here will yield nothing if one does not live through everything happening. However, the streams of darkness and hopelessness pouring into the auditorium may be too much for some to bear. The set design aims to maintain the appropriate atmosphere. Thus, the metaphorical brick wall that the three sisters are trying to break through will be pierced through, but at the end of the performance, it will be rebuilt, leaving no hope for salvation. The director remains true to his principles. He believes that a true performance should primarily be a personal confession; otherwise, it is not theater but service to the audience. According to this principle, the actors also work. On stage, the audience sees a piece of their drama, which has been lived and processed through them "off-screen" and periodically breaks through in lines, actions, and reactions. The artists do not portray nobles and officers from the early last century, and Chekhov's text, without losing anything of its Chekhovian essence, sounds modern and relevant. As always with Butusov, there is a lot of music in the performance. Bach and Ravel, Deep Purple and Elvis Presley, Claudia Shulzhenko and Eminem can be heard. The main soundtrack was composed by Faustas Latenas. The duration of the performance is 4 hours and 30 minutes, with two intermissions.
