About

The holder of the "Golden Mask" award for "Best Director in Opera", Lyudmila Naletova, adapted the libretto by L. Illica and G. Giacosa, and in January 2004 presented Giacomo Puccini's opera "Tosca" on the stage of MAMTA. The classic operatic plot, embodied in the genre of high drama, was first presented to the audience in Italy in 1900 - that was when the premiere of the new work by the master of Italian opera Giacomo Puccini took place. Subsequently, directors were tasked with encapsulating roles, characters, images, and their development into a harmonious form. Lyudmila Naletova, combining the dramatic situations of the plot with music, created a true example of the interaction of key ideas and their artistic reinforcement (set designer Elena Stepanova). The main character - the singer Floria Tosca - is an impulsive nature, approaching everything with the passion of a wild beast, experiencing love as vividly as jealousy, exulting in what is happening while simultaneously suffering from it. She aims to be with the love of her life - the artist Mario Cavaradossi, and is willing to do anything for him, even commit murder. Both heroes are devoted not only to the high feeling of love for each other but also to their passion for art. The backdrop of reflected historical events is also important: before the audience is Italy, invaded by Napoleon's troops. Special attention is paid to the metaphorical correlation of the heroes' moods with the surrounding world: the artistic design of the performance includes a video sequence of three colors, projected in the depth of the stage. Shades of white, red, and black become a reflection of each act. Thus, at the moment of musical and dramatic transmission of the love between Tosca and Cavaradossi, the white color dominates, symbolizing the cloudless happiness of the heroes. However, in the scenes of torture in Scarpia's palace, the atmosphere is intensified by a halo of red - the color of blood. The death of Cavaradossi and Tosca is marked by the gloom of black shades. A directorial find can also be considered the symbolic figure of a woman, who opens each action in the oppressive silence.
