Children roll three snowballs and build a Snowman. Everything in the new world is interesting to the animated snow creature. He meets people, the moon, and the sun, makes friends with a dog, and falls in love... with a hot home stove. Amid the cheerful antics of the children, the Snowman comes to life. Two pieces of roofing tiles serve as his eyes, and a piece of an old rake is attached in place of his mouth. If the boys had made him legs, he would have run to skate on the ice. But he cannot move from his spot. When the moon rose, the Snowman thought it was the sun approaching him from behind. The inexperience of the snow creature irritates the old dog, who barks for order from his kennel and complains of pains in his paw, which foreshadow a change in the weather. The dog tells the Snowman the story of his life. Once he was a puppy and lived in a house. He was petted, cuddled, kissed, and spoiled in every way. Then he grew up and became less entertaining. He was given to the housekeeper. He started living in the kitchen, next to the big hot stove. The stories about the stove inexplicably excite the Snowman. He falls in love. He doesn't sleep all night and dreams of snuggling up to her. The next day, a thaw begins, and soon the dog will see what was the cause of this fateful love... The tale is narrated by Andrey Nechaev.
