About

A production by Sergey Zhenovach about a "little man" who just wants to live, nominated for the "Golden Mask" award in the categories of "Best Small Form Performance" and "Best Director's Work." The play by Nikolai Erdman, written in 1928, was not published or staged during the author's lifetime - it was banned. Subsequent stage versions did not achieve great success. Sergey Zhenovach's production is not the first staging, but it is quite possibly one of the most successful to date. The director believes that this play is difficult to stage, as it can fall apart compositionally on stage. Therefore, he decided to meticulously extract only the story of the main character, reducing some characters. However, all those who remain are large, bright, juicy images, not caricatures, but simple people with their vices, wanting to live and be in demand. According to the plot of the play, Podsekalnikov, driven to the edge by a quarrel with his wife, decides to commit suicide. The neighbors in the communal apartment believe that it makes no sense to commit suicide just like that. It must be for an idea, for love, for art, even for religion. And then from Podsekalnikov's shot, the whole country will rise. It is decided that for the sake of the goal, the suicide must be committed. The shot is scheduled for the next day, and luxurious wakes are planned. At the appointed time, Podsekalnikov is brought home dead drunk. Hearing the sound of the approaching funeral procession, he tries to shoot himself, but he lacks the spirit, and Podsekalnikov hides in a nearby coffin. The coffin - as everyone thinks, with a body - is taken to the cemetery, but Podsekalnikov suddenly rises from it and declares that he still wants to live, and is ready to give up his place to anyone who wishes. His life is not sweet, but he wants to manage it himself and live according to his own discretion, without depending on others' opinions.
