About

Roman Gabrya interprets the famous novel in verse as a struggle between two principles - life and death in the guise of Tatiana and Eugene. The play became the first production based on Pushkin at the "Shelter of the Comedian" stage. There are no historical costumes or portraits from Pushkin's time here. Only five characters performed by young actors from BDT and the "Workshop". There are also two mystical figures: the omnipotent Handra (either the constant companion of Onegin or death itself) and the young Pushkin, symbolizing the poet's soul protecting Tatiana. According to Roman Gabrya, his heroine is more sensual and stronger than, for example, Anna Karenina or Nastasya Filippovna. In this story, Tatiana faces the deathly cold of Eugene. The action takes place in a cold ascetic world, reflecting Onegin's inner world. The beauty here is icy, devoid of sunlight and warmth. One of the key roles is played by the passionate choreography of Alexey Karpenko, known for his risky experiments on the TV show "Dancing". The allegorical text of Pushkin meets the theater of action, where the spoken word is not as important as the bodily reflection of experiences. Poetry remains but is translated into the language of the body. For more performances in St. Petersburg, visit our website in the theater section.
