Director Andrey Prikotenko is working with the Alexandrinsky Theatre for the first time and continues his line of productions exploring the "Russian matrix". For Prikotenko, Oblomov is Ivan the Fool, whose will is paralyzed by a maximalist dream. The hero possesses inner energy but seems unable to move, trapped in his own life realities like in a cocoon. His idyllic Oblomovka looms before him like paradise, to which all his being is directed, but it is never destined to materialize in reality. Oblomov's friend, Schultz, on the contrary, is in constant motion; it is in him that the meaning of life lies. This is where the characters of Goncharov's novel differ, and this contrast becomes the focus of the director's attention.
