About

Today, it is hard to find a country where the issue of migration and the necessary tolerance is not being discussed. Surprisingly, even after the monstrous lessons of slavery and fascism, conflicts on national grounds still arise in the most civilized societies. Polish playwright Tadeusz Słobodzianek wrote his play "Our Class," recalling the monstrous murder of Jews committed by Poles in Jedwabne in 1941. Commenting on his work, the author notes that he sought in part to dismantle and correct the image of the "eternally oppressed and doomed to undeserved suffering" Polish people. The play, staged at the St. Petersburg MDT by Natalia Kolotova, tells the tragic story of the confrontation between Jewish and Polish children in a public school, which over the years has taken on the scale of a serious interethnic conflict. With his play, Słobodzianek does not seek to answer the pressing questions of "Who is to blame?" and why what is happening is happening; the playwright emphasizes the need for the audience to pose these and other questions in the context of the horrific events that occurred and the rich present filled with such conflicts.
