Bulgakov's phantasmagoric fantasies have taken root well on the MHT stage, retaining their satirical hints, philosophical reflections, theological-mystical moods, and the lyrical line of the titular characters. The famous Hungarian theater and film director János Szász unhesitatingly sent the characters of the novel into an abstract 21st century, making the Moscow metro the setting. Both the costumes and the characters' professions correspond to modern realities. Thus, Koroviev appears as a top manager of an advertising company, Georges Bengalinsky as a TV showman, and Stepan Likhodeev as a canary-like bohemian character. Woland, played by Dmitry Nazarov, is elegant and charismatic, yet simplified and reminiscent of a powerful oligarch. The main characters of the novel and, accordingly, the play are not only and not so much the Master and Margarita, but also Yeshua and Pilate - one brought Good into the world against the established realities and ultimately paid for it with his earthly life; the other bent under the same realities and thus condemned himself to eternal torment. Their duet is the main nerve of the entire production. The space of the play plays a special role. The mood of the entire production is defined by the urban subway - a tunnel with an inevitably and aggressively approaching spotlight, aggressive turnstiles, and an endless human flow. The magnificent decorations by Nikolai Simonov are expressive and symbolic. At the end of the play, the tunnel before the Master and Margarita is illuminated by a lunar disc, which is associated with the planet Melancholia of Lars von Trier, casting its gloomy light on the European plains.
