The grand performance by the artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, Valery Fokin, was created in honor of the 200th anniversary of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov. The directors aimed to create a theatrical composition that would accumulate the achievements of the great performance by V. Meyerhold, which took place on the stage of the Alexandrinsky nearly a century ago, in the winter of 1917. Using documented visual techniques and mise-en-scènes employed by Meyerhold in his production, they managed to recreate with high accuracy the scenography, music, and organizing rhythmic canvas of the legendary director's production. Time seems to turn back, and today's audience finds themselves in the past. Thanks to the latest technologies, one of the most outstanding productions of the 20th century is being revived on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre. A unique collection of stage costumes and props from Meyerhold's production, recreated from Golovin's drawings, has been given new life. The Lermontov text will be spoken by the characters of Meyerhold's play, and modern actors will take it up. Two Arbenins (performed by the corifeus of the Alexandrinsky, Yu. M. Yurev - Arbenin of the 21st century) will recite the text of the 26-year-old poet, written in the 19th century. It can be confidently said that today "Masquerade" is becoming increasingly relevant.
