A sophisticated five-hour visualization of the nightmares of Sir and Lady Macbeth directed by Yuri Butusov. "Macbeth. Cinema" is the first production created by Yuri Butusov in the role of artistic director of the legendary Lensovet Theatre. This play is not just a director's version of the dark Shakespearean text, but also a unique manifesto that defines Butusov's work concept and his idea of a new theatre. The classic play is restructured in the performance, assembled anew according to the principle of non-linear editing. The plot is reproduced in fragments, key scenes interspersed with dance interludes are repeated over and over, characters swap places, and are cloned in several incarnations. The director focuses on the events themselves, rather than on the reflections of the Macbeths, accomplices, and victims of their own crimes. What happens on stage is a prolonged neurotic delirium, a series of painful flashbacks, a bloody abyss of memory in which the heroes drown. The scenography, which Butusov worked on independently, is extremely minimalist: an almost bare stage, black-and-white photos and posters, wooden structures, and lonely doors with ironic slogans. The visual solution, dominated by black, red, and white colors, sets the rhythm of the performance, into which a diverse music lover's soundtrack is intricately woven, serving as a separate meaningful code.
