About

The play directed by Moscow director Mikhail Tsitrinyak tells the story of the great actress Sarah Bernhardt. On the stage of the Vakhtangov Theatre, there are only two - the actress herself (Yulia Rutberg) and her secretary, and all the monologues and dialogues are directed to the past. The basis for the production is the play "The Laughter of the Lobster" by Canadian playwright John Marrell. On stage, Yulia Rutberg (who played in the play "Medea") and Andrey Ilyin, the favorite actors of Mikhail Tsitrinyak. On the waves of memory, 77-year-old Sarah Bernhardt is transported to the stage, to her childhood, reliving conflicts with her mother, and conversing with her lover. She still needs emotions and passions, but they can only be experienced by recalling the past. She longs for the stage and her partners and expresses herself in monologues and dialogues with her secretary Pitu. Now they are at a French resort, at the actress's villa, surrounded only by pebbles and Sarah's notebooks with memoirs. A world legend, she traveled the world, performing before princes and kings. And now, feeling the closeness of the end, she wants to "play" the performance of her life anew. Her stage partner is Georges Pitu, who is a quarter of a century younger than Sarah and is in love with her like a young man. In an hour and a half, he will appear in the roles of Sarah's mother, her impresario, a nun, and even Oscar Wilde. And an amazing metamorphosis occurs. From a slender, well-groomed old woman, Sarah transforms into an incredible beauty with a burning gaze, witty, full of life and creative energy. She has a leg amputated and her kidneys are failing, she sees things as they are. But that is Sarah Bernhardt - she does not back down before life and will never bow her head.
