A musical based on the fairy tale by Pyotr Yershov. The production of Yershov's classic fairy tale at the Moscow Art Theatre involved almost exclusively "stars": the script was rewritten by the famous playwrights the Presnyakov brothers, the lyrics were written by Alexey Kortnev, and the director Evgeny Pisarov has made a name for himself with productions of the most popular comedies at the Moscow Art Theatre and the Pushkin Theatre. As a result of these joint efforts, a brilliant production was created, which has rightfully been nominated for numerous theatre awards. The creators of "The Little Humpbacked Horse" managed to avoid the cloying sweetness and sentimentality that often plague children's performances. Moreover, the production turned out to be not just for children, but rather family-oriented: alongside the fairy tale plot, there are jokes, quotes, and allusions that parents will appreciate. The fairy tale has been modernized but remains kind-hearted (for many, it was a revelation that the Presnyakov brothers can write wonderfully witty things); and in terms of the quantity and quality of songs, dances, and skilled tricks, "The Little Humpbacked Horse" does not yield to Broadway musicals.
