The play based on the play by Pyotr Gnedich, which was successfully staged in the 20th century on the Russian stage, is presented by Andrey Moguchy. The events of the play unfold in the year of the assassination of Paul I - 1801, and its heroes are the noble family of Plavutins-Plavuntsovs. Director Andrey Moguchy has combined several genres in his play - historical, melodrama, and tragicomedy. However, one should not expect everyday historical details from the performance, of course. As always with Moguchy, there will be much symbolism, associations, and bridges stretching from the past to the present. Gnedich's play, written in 1907, has been staged many times with great success. The role of Princess Ekaterina has become a benefit for outstanding actresses, including Maria Yermolova, Maria Savina, and Elena Gogoleva. In the BDT performance, the lead role is played by Marina Ignatova. You can find even more performances in St. Petersburg on our website in the theater section.
