About

Oscar Wilde's comedy - the wittiest Englishman in history according to the English themselves - directed by Viktor Shamirov. This light and sparkling play belongs to the "society comedies" written by Wilde in the early 1890s. The plot features many farcical and melodramatic elements, with dialogues taking center stage. In the story, John and Algernon court the same girl while pretending to be a certain Ernest (the name sounds like the English word earnest - "serious, honest", making the title a pun). Ultimately, the deceivers are exposed. Moreover, they turn out to be brothers, and one of them is indeed named Ernest. Director Viktor Shamirov relocates the action to the mid-20th century. The elegant and life-affirming production is adorned with magnificent costumes created by artist Andrei Klimov. The audience will learn why the servants of all bachelors prefer champagne, whether marriage truly demoralizes, where the sandwiches with cucumber come from, and many other serious matters.
