In the story, John and Algernon court the same girl while pretending to be a certain Ernest (the name sounds like the English word earnest - "serious, honest", making the title a pun). Ultimately, the deceivers are exposed. Moreover, they turn out to be brothers, and one of them is indeed named Ernest. Director Viktor Shamirov relocates the action to the mid-20th century.
