About

A romantic ballet based on the classic plot by Victor Hugo, directed by V. Burmeister. In the mid-19th century, the famous choreographer Jules Perrot arrives in St. Petersburg, where he stages his ballet "Esmeralda," originally created for Her Majesty's Theatre in London based on the libretto written by Hugo for the eponymous opera. Fifty years later, Marius Petipa adds several new dance numbers for Claude Frollo and Quasimodo, who had previously been satisfied with pantomime. About half a century later, at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre, a new Petipa emerges - Vladimir Burmeister. In 1950, he releases a new edition of "Esmeralda" - with a revised libretto and updated orchestration. This is the ballet that Sergey Filin reconstructed for the modern production. "Esmeralda" is carefully and diversely conceived both choreographically and dramatically. As soon as the curtain rises, the audience finds themselves in medieval Paris, in the square before the gothic portals of Notre-Dame. The comedic "coronation" of Quasimodo at the festival of urban poverty is replaced by elegant salon dances in the wealthy home of Captain Phoebus's bride. But the main adornment of the ballet remains the inventive and passionate dance of Esmeralda herself - the temperamental gypsy, trapped by her own beauty.
