Volchek's directorial debut was so successful that it remained on the stage of the "Sovremennik" for almost 40 years, becoming one of the most sought-after productions in the theater's entire history and consistently drawing full houses. Galina Borisovna herself admits that she returned to her own production to present the love story told in it in a modern vision. The main characters of the play are successful lawyer Jerry and dancer Gittele. Jerry is in the process of getting divorced and has come to New York from Nebraska on business. Gittele is poor and constantly unwell. They met at a party and decided to stay together. Their lives are empty, they lack human warmth, and for each of them, this meeting became a turning point in their lives.
