The basis of the production by Rimas Tuminas is a historical document - the diary of a girl named Anne Frank, which she kept during the days of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The notes of thirteen-year-old Anne, published shortly after World War II, shocked the world. The girl described in detail how her Jewish family was forced to hide from the Nazi occupiers in Amsterdam. Anne's family and several friends hid in a shelter that was not visible from outside the house, and it seemed that the house was uninhabited. The shelter had a secret door hidden behind a wardrobe. In such conditions, the family lived for two years, but the shelter was discovered, and all its inhabitants were arrested. Anne hoped to publish her notes when the war was over. But the girl did not live to see the end of the war; she died of typhus in a German camp. Her father published the diary in 1947 in a slightly abridged version.
