A director from Finland has staged a play based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. This small Christmas story often appears in collections of Andersen's tales. But, like many other works of the Danish storyteller, it is not so much a fairy tale. Rather, it is even realistic. A little beggar girl sells matches on the night before Christmas. But people rush past her, hurrying home. The girl freezes and starts lighting her matches one by one. In the flames, she sees her grandmother, a warm home, a Christmas tree. But all this is just fantasies, and the reality is a frosty night that will never end. This story is not a festive performance with a happy ending, but it teaches children and adults to be kinder, and that is the essence of New Year and Christmas.
