About

Maxim Gorky's play, which is not often seen on stage, is presented by director Yuri Ioffe. The work was created in 1910, after the first failed Russian revolution. The author places disillusioned intelligentsia at the center of the play. Maxim Gorky sarcastically tells about the life of himself and his surroundings. The first thing the audience sees on stage is the scenery depicting a summer cottage interior: wicker chairs, a terrace, a hammock, and pines. The characters of the play gather around a table for tea with jam, and immediately the witty Gorky dialogues begin, relevant for any time. Conversations take place about politics, hunting, and of course, feelings. Bored Russian intellectuals suffer from the summer heat and fall in love to brighten their stay at the dacha. The main character - writer Mastakov - is torn between his kind-hearted, understanding wife and an adventurous neighbor. The doctor is hopelessly in love with Mastakov's wife, while the policeman has given his heart to a young charming lady who has yet to realize her feelings. The action takes place in 1910, and the audience inevitably wonders what will happen to these characters after the revolution: will they stay in Russia and survive these difficult days or will they emigrate and there, in some provincial town in France, gather again for tea and friendly conversation. Director Yuri Ioffe admits that he has long cherished the dream of staging this play. He himself calls it "a riddle that not everyone can solve." In Gorky's "Fools" there are more questions than answers, but those who can dig to the essence may be able to answer the writer's main question: why "we live not by logic, but - as God puts on our soul."
