The director turned to the work of Bertolt Brecht, the founder of epic theater. In writing his anti-war political satire, the playwright was inspired by Hašek's novel about Schweik and transferred the character to the contemporary realities of his time - in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. Bayaliev's play is not tied to any specific era. The action unfolds on a bullet-riddled red cross, which symbolizes either a road or a podium for speeches. It is a story about how monstrous cataclysms occur due to petty human intrigues and passions. Evil does not arise from some villain, but from human deeds. At the same time, Brecht does not dramatize what is happening, but makes it clear that it can be regarded as a given that should not interfere with viewing life with a smile.
