About

Mikhail Bulgakov's play, never staged during the author's lifetime, is a tragic reflection on a fratricidal war, a country torn by contradictions, and dreams of finding a homeland. The factual material for creating the play was based on the emigration memories of Lyubov Belozerskaya-Bulgakova - the writer's second wife, fragments from the works of Arkady Averchenko, Alexei Tolstoy, and other authors. The characters in the play are running away from themselves and from tragic situations; they are lost, turned into wanderers. Tragedy has befallen various people: the broken intellectual Golubkov, the helpless Serafima, the fatalist Chernota, and the tormented man with a sick, torn soul - General Roman Khlyudov, whose prototype was the former general of the White movement Yakov Slashev-Krymsky. In his consciousness, wandering between sleep and reality, the people he killed come to life. The hero, in despair and longing, returns to his homeland to find repentance and retribution. "Running Away" reflects the theme of disappointments, the collapse of illusions. The characters have reached a dead end, and their endless running is akin to delirium, to nightmares. Bulgakov named some acts - dreams. The play is written outside the framework of any specific genre, but it is closest to psychological drama and phantasmagoria, practically falling out of the surrounding reality. Costumes by Maxim Obrezkov, music by Faustas Latėnas, artistic design by Alexander Shishkin. See more performances on our website in the theatre section.
