Neon Hong Kong, rapid editing, voice-over monologues, and the expressive camera of Christopher Doyle will connect stories of chance encounters, unfulfilled feelings, and people who continue to live in the past. All films will be shown with subtitles. The retrospective opens with one of the fastest films by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai, «Chungking Express». Two policemen experience breakups and hardly notice how new feelings arise around them. Hong Kong is depicted through cramped eateries, nighttime streets, accelerated movement, and random encounters. The next film, «Fallen Angels», takes viewers into dark alleys and works with a sharper rhythm. A hitman decides to leave the business, his agent is left alone with his attachment, and a mute young man captures closed shops at night and imposes strange services on passersby. At the center of the third film, «In the Mood for Love», are Su and Chow, neighbors who discover their spouses' infidelities. Their closeness develops cautiously, amidst narrow corridors, repeated meetings, and conversations where the unspoken is most important. The plot of the film «2046» revolves around a writer who creates a fantastical novel about a train to the year 2046, but is actually reliving his own past. The final film, «The Ashes of Time: Redux», transports familiar themes into the world of martial arts and ancient legends. All five films will be shown in their original language with Russian subtitles.
