About

In his report, Danila Shlapakov compares the Sound Studies of Anatoly Ryasov and the phenomenology of music by Alexei Losev. The next meeting of the interdisciplinary seminar for young scholars "Reading Losev" will take place at the library-museum "House of A. F. Losev". This event has become a platform for discussions on philosophy, music, and sound, uniting different generations of researchers. Danila Shlapakov, a master's student at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lomonosov Moscow State University, an employee of the House of Losev, and a specialist in the philosophy of music, will present the report. At the center of the discussion is Anatoly Ryasov's book "Barely Audible Hum," in which the author examines the tradition of Sound Studies through the lens of the works of thinkers such as Christopher Cox, Jean-Luc Nancy, Raymond Schafer, and Michel Chion. Ryasov offers a philosophical reconsideration of sound experience that goes beyond positivist methodology and addresses phenomenological, semiotic, and ontological foundations. At the same time, the philosophy of music by Alexei Losev is analyzed, especially his works from the 1920s, in which he formulates his own phenomenological approach. Losev viewed music as an expression of deep ontological structures, which makes it possible to compare his views with contemporary sound theories. The seminar raises questions of continuity and differences between the two directions: the philosophy of sound appealing to non-classical concepts and classical phenomenology of music. The meeting will be of interest to students, graduate students, researchers, as well as anyone interested in philosophy, sound theory, and Losev's legacy.
