The research laboratory "Archive as a Puzzle" invites you to look at personal documents as a source of living history. Participants will work with an authentic 20th-century archive, learn to handle ego-documents, and feel like true historians of everyday life. This is a chance to see the past in a new light and restore connections with forgotten voices. What can be learned about the past when all you have in front of you is a stack of yellowed letters, diary entries, and family photographs? The research laboratory "Archive as a Puzzle" gives each participant the opportunity to try their hand at being a historian, reconstructing personal stories from fragments of private memory. As part of the project "Memory on the Margins," created by the Yeltsin Center in collaboration with the "Lived" Center of the European University in St. Petersburg, participants are invited to work with digital copies of a real family archive from the 1920s to the 1980s. This collection, full of scattered documents, serves as the basis for restoring lost connections, emotional contexts, and the everyday realities of a bygone era.
