An interactive session will introduce children to Chukchi folklore through reading, play, and theatrical improvisation. A fairy tale is especially memorable when a child not only listens to it but also experiences it through movement and play. This session is built on that very principle. The focus will be on the Chukchi story of the evil sorceress Katgyrgin, who could turn people into beasts and brought much trouble, and the hunter Tyneen, who once found himself in her cave. Through this plot, the kids will learn about the folklore of the peoples of Siberia, the Far East, and the Arctic, as well as see how notions of good, courage, and overcoming danger are reflected in fairy tale form. The kids will listen to the tale and discuss it, and then try to act out individual scenes. At the end of the session, participants will craft a "Chukchi hunter" in a national style.
