In this session, children will become little explorers: together with the teacher, they will trace the path of Christopher Columbus and learn how one maritime mistake changed the map of the world. Great discoveries often start with a mistake, and the story of Christopher Columbus is a vivid example of this. In the session, children will hear the story of a man who dreamed of finding a shortcut to spices and silk, but ended up stumbling upon uncharted lands. The kids will reconstruct the journey's route, learn why sailors valued maps so highly, what ships looked like during the Age of Great Discoveries, and why a captain needs a crew. Special attention will be given to the technological innovations of that era: the compass, sail shapes, and the structure of the ship. In the practical part of the session, the kids will try their hand as travelers: they will think about what they would take with them on a long voyage, what qualities help them stay on course, and how to distinguish courage from recklessness. The final stage will be a creative task - the children will build a ship and present what its route might have been. The session is suitable for children aged six to eight.
