About

A series of film screenings and lectures on how directors from different eras have interpreted urban space, its social structure, and rhythm of life - from the futuristic utopias of Fritz Lang to the documentary symphonies of Dziga Vertov. The first in the program will be "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang - a monumental dystopia about a future world divided into the workers' underground and the heavens of the chosen. Lang created not just a city, but a living organism, governed by machines and subject to the logic of industrial capitalism. After the screening, film scholar Kirill Vlaskin will explain why "Metropolis" became not only a milestone in film history but also an inspiration for architects and urbanists of the 20th century. Next, the audience will see "New Moscow" by Alexander Medvedkin - a film about the reconstruction project of the capital, shot in 1938 and long banned from screening. An ironic story about the designer Alyosha and his "living model" of the city demonstrates how ideology turns utopia into farce. Lecturer Galina Orlova will discuss with the guests how this film reflects faith in technological progress and simultaneous anxiety about its consequences. The final meeting of the cycle will unite two masterpieces - "Berlin: Symphony of a Great City" by Walter Ruttmann and "Man with a Movie Camera" by Dziga Vertov. Both films create a rhythmic poetry of urban life, where the mechanics of the streets and the movement of masses turn into visual music. Film archivist and curator of the "Garage" museum Alisa Nasrtdinova will explain how these films influenced the development of documentary editing and why, after 100 years, they sound modern. The cycle "More than a City" is an opportunity to see how cinema captures the spirit of the era through architecture and urbanism, how factory chimneys and human destinies connect in the frame.
