The 2021 production as part of the Rossini Festival in Pesaro became a true cultural event: the opera was performed in a rare French edition, and the direction, set design, and costumes were handled by maestro Pier Luigi Pizzi, whose connection with the festival began back in 1982. This stage version is a hymn to restrained expressiveness. Minimalist decorations, muted colors, abstract video projections, and clear color differentiation of costumes - all create visual harmony. The performance lacks excessive pomp - yet it captivates the imagination with its elegance and precision. Elements of lighting design refer to the work of artist James Turrell. On stage is a powerful cast of soloists: Eleonora Buratto, Erwin Schrott, Roberto Tagliavini, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya. The latter is the festival's discovery: a young Siberian singer, a graduate of the Rossini Opera Academy, shines in the role of Zinaida. The Italian Radio Orchestra, conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti, gives the music genuine depth and emotionality.
