A bourgeois celebration turns into a noisy comedy of characters, where the groom counts the dowry, the hosts dream of impressing the guests with an important rank, and an accidental truth shatters the carefully prepared facade. Official Applombov courted Dashenka Zhigalova all summer, but before the decisive conversation, he begins to bargain with her parents. He is interested in the dowry, promised items, and the social status of the future family. For the groom, marriage becomes a profitable deal, and the hosts are willing to endure his demands for a respectable match for their daughter. Already in the first scenes, director Isidor Annenksy sets the precise comic rhythm: each character thinks about their own prestige and tries to appear more significant than they are. The comedy is based on the motifs of vaudeville and stories by Anton Chekhov. We will suggest what to do in Moscow.
