The performance of the Salzburg Festival combines psychological drama, complex staging, and the sound of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. After the screening, opera critic Vadim Zhuravlev will discuss what was seen with the audience. Translating Fyodor Dostoevsky's prose to the opera stage means condensing the sprawling novel while preserving the clash of characters and the painful sharpness of relationships. Mieczysław Weinberg's last opera focuses on Prince Myshkin, Rogozhin, and Nastasya Filippovna. Their encounters gradually weave into a story of compassion, obsession, and destructive dependency, where the hero's kindness proves defenseless against the passions of others. The production for the Salzburg Festival was created by Krzysztof Warlikowski, a director known for his attention to psychological details and the complex organization of stage space. The Felsenreitschule with its stone arcades becomes part of the action: the characters exist in an environment that simultaneously resembles a public hall, a sanatorium, and a space of memory. The set design and costumes by Małgorzata Szczęśniak help connect the personal drama of the characters with a world that observes every movement they make. The musical direction is by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. Together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, she reveals Weinberg's score, where restrained episodes are replaced by sharp emotional outbursts. The leading roles are performed by Bohdan Volkov, Aušrinė Stundytė, and Vladislav Sulimsky. The camera allows for a close-up view of the actors' performances and captures reactions that easily escape notice in a theater setting. The recording is in Russian with Russian subtitles.
