Pavel Arsenov's musical fairy tale transforms Carlo Gozzi's play into a vibrant game of masks, transformations, and court intrigues. King Deramo is searching for a bride and hopes to distinguish sincere feelings from calculation. At the court, where everyone tries to appear better and more honest than they are, magic becomes a way to test people. However, the ruler's trustfulness turns into danger: the first minister Tartaglia learns the secret of the spell and uses it to take someone else's place. The king finds himself in the body of a stag, while the deceiver assumes his appearance and power. Pavel Arsenov constructs the film as a theatrical performance, where symbolic scenery, masks, and pantomime are more important than everyday realism. The audience is constantly reminded that they are witnessing a fairy tale and a game, but behind this lightness lie quite adult themes - fidelity, trust, the thirst for power, and the ability to see the person behind the external appearance. Transformation here serves as a test: the characters must prove their feelings when familiar faces guarantee nothing anymore. Mikael Tariverdiev's music unites the court comedy, romantic scenes, and magical episodes into one.
