A play by Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, not only a member of the imperial family but also a poet, playwright, and translator, will take place on the stage of the Academic Chapel of St. Petersburg. The play "King of the Jews" was written by Konstantin Konstantinovich over a hundred years ago. The setting, as one might guess, is Jerusalem. The work describes the events of the last days of Christ's life - from his entry into the city to the Resurrection. Despite the clear adherence to the Gospels in the text of the drama, it was banned from being staged by the Synod. However, later there were still a few performances, which took place, however, in the court theater of the Hermitage, "for insiders", by a non-professional troupe assembled by the Grand Duke. In 1913, the music for the drama was composed by the director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, composer, and conductor Alexander Glazunov. Although the composition was written "on commission", "King of the Jews" became one of the most significant works in the author's legacy. The composer was captivated by the challenge posed by fate - he was to create the first work in Russian music on a religious theme with the participation of a choir and a full symphonic orchestra.
