One of the best and most mature works of the Russian composer Alexander Tikhonovich Grechaninov based on the play by N.V. Gogol. Grechaninov's "Marriage" is far less known than the opera of the same name by M.P. Mussorgsky. The composer wrote it in 1946, when he was well over 80; it is his third opera. He did not rely on Mussorgsky; the work is completely independent. The opera has only been performed twice, and both times in foreign theaters. In 2009, in honor of the 200th anniversary of Gogol, the premiere of the musical "Marriage" took place in Russia at the N.I. Sats Musical Theater. The work is written in the best traditions of the Russian composer's school. Grechaninov carefully treated the original Gogol text and storyline, conveying the characters' traits. The plot of the opera develops dynamically, the unique authorial language sounds from the mouths of colorful characters, and the parts are performed by young soloists. All this makes the production especially appealing to schoolchildren and youth.
