This opera is based on the strange work of Nikolai Leskov "The Enchanted Wanderer". The novice of the Valaam Monastery, Ivan Severyanovich Flyagin, narrates his life throughout the opera. He recalls how, in his youth, as a joke, he killed a monk with a whip, and this event predetermined his further life. He was captured by the Tatars but survived and escaped. He squandered a huge sum of money to ransom the beautiful gypsy Grushenka from the camp and miraculously escaped death again. As a result of complex spiritual torments and the "love triangle" constructed by Leskov, Flyagin kills the gypsy, but later, in visions, two innocent souls that he deprived of life continue to appear to him. "The Enchanted Wanderer" is a completely new production by opera standards, with its premiere taking place in 2002 in New York. The high praise from critics gave "The Wanderer" a ticket to a long stage life. The composer's special style was also noted: he bypassed the traditional scheme for this genre, refusing the classical language of "singing performances" and constructing his work in the form of a universal vocal dialogue among the characters. Some critics noted the choir's perfect "hit", while others admired the special pauses, but one thing is clear - the nervous system of "The Enchanted Wanderer" is complex and interesting for both viewing and listening. Moreover, the libretto was written by Rodion Shchedrin himself, which certainly improved the connection between music and text. The duration of the performance is 1 hour and 35 minutes.
