A lengthy dialogue unfolds between them, prompting the officer to consider marriage. According to the plot, the geisha named Butterfly makes heavy sacrifices for love, not sparing herself. However, her beloved does not appreciate this; moreover, he treacherously betrays her and marries another. The poor girl cannot bear her grief and, in despair, takes her own life. The alternation of lyrical arias and expressive soprano, accompanied by authentic Japanese melodies, creates a broad sound from the stage, a technique characteristic of the great Puccini's works.
