An opera by Umberto Giordano about love and art in the deadly whirlpool of revolution. The main character of Giordano's opera is the poet Andrea Chénier, a real witness and participant in the French Revolution of 1789. A young writer, who was inspired by slogans of universal freedom, equality, and brotherhood, ended his life on the guillotine, like tens of thousands of other Frenchmen. According to director Alexander Titel, the opera focuses on the artist at the epicenter of revolutionary events and his responsibility to the past and future, as well as how revolution can change its ideals to the opposite.
