About

A practical workshop on the cinema of perestroika will show how viewers in the late 1980s debated films, characters, and new themes on screen. Participants will analyze letters, film excerpts, and the language of live responses to see the era through emotions, expectations, personal reactions, and disputes surrounding changes in the culture and society of the country. The late 1980s was a time when cinema ceased to be just a screen event. Films were discussed in letters, in kitchens, in editorial offices, after screenings, and in lines for tickets. Viewers argued about heroes, morality, freedom, prohibitions, and what had previously remained outside public discourse. These reactions help to understand perestroika not as a set of political slogans, but as the living experience of people learning to speak about themselves and their country again. The workshop is built around working with the collection "Letters from Viewers during Perestroika" of the project "Kinofikatsiya". This is not a dry archive, but material in which different voices can be heard: enthusiastic, indignant, confused, attentive to details. Participants will reconstruct viewer narratives - analyzing what meanings people invested in domestic and foreign films, which plots were perceived painfully, and why some films evoked trust while others resistance.
