Liya Akhedzhakova brings to Israel one of her favorite roles - Esther in the play "My Grandson Benjamin" based on the play by Lyudmila Ulitskaya. The heroine is the "last shtetl Jewess," living in memories of the past and cherishing the traditions of her childhood; used to making decisions for everyone, she travels to her hometown Bobruisk to bring her son a bride from a "proper" Jewish family. The production was directed by Marfa Gorvits, a laureate of the "Golden Mask". Four performances will take place from January 24 to 30, 2027, in Be'er Sheva, Rishon Lezion, Ashdod, and Haifa. The play was written by Ulitskaya in the late 1980s, but sounds absolutely contemporary: the relationships between parents and children, family traditions, national identity, and the right of a person to choose their own life. Critics noted the rare artistic result for a touring production and the precise balance of humor and drama. Tickets for all four dates start at 235 ₪, with online seat selection; schedule and prices by city in the table below.
