About

Participants will read Charles Perrault's fairy tale in French, discuss the characters, and compare Russian translations with the original. Reading literary texts in a foreign language often turns into a race for the general meaning: unfamiliar words are skipped, complex phrases are simplified, and the author's intonation remains almost unnoticed. But in this meeting, participants will slow down and thoroughly analyze Charles Perrault's fairy tale from the 1902 edition. First, the group will read excerpts from the original, then examine how the author describes the characters and creates the plot intrigue. Special attention will be paid to words and grammatical constructions that are rarely found in textbooks but reveal the features of literary speech. Participants will be able to ask questions and suggest their own translation options. A separate topic will be the comparison of Russian translations. Readers will see how different translation decisions change the images of the characters and the impression of the entire story. The session is designed for participants with a French language proficiency level of at least A2. The session will be conducted by French language teacher Tatyana Sosenkaya. Where to go in Moscow on weekends will be suggested by our website.
