About

Shoes are more than just a part of the wardrobe. They are a detail that sets the image, influences the plot, and tells about the character without words. The lecture will discuss how shoes become an important element of cinematic language, inspired by Art Deco, "The Devil Wears Prada", and the magic of costumes on screen. This lecture will not only talk about shoes but also about how they transform into an expressive tool of cinematic language. Inspired by the exhibition "Packed Dreams" at the Hermitage, which paid special attention to shoes from the Art Deco era, the organizers decided to continue the conversation - now in a cinematic context. Fashion and art historian Ekaterina Bychkova will explain the role of shoes, boots, and heels in plot development and character revelation. From the iconic line "So, good boots, you should take them" to Miranda Priestly's model stilettos from "The Devil Wears Prada" - shoes become not just an element of the image but an accent on which the visual narrative is built. What can shoes say about a character? Why can a change of shoes in a frame symbolize an internal transformation? How do designers and costume artists use them to emphasize an era, style, drama, or even irony? All these questions will be part of an engaging lecture filled with visual examples and cinematic references. Admission is free, but prior registration is required.
