About

The lecture is dedicated to how the first educational institutions for girls appeared in St. Petersburg and how perceptions of women's education changed. Listeners will learn the stories of institutes, boarding schools, and schools where students were given knowledge and professions, as well as discuss the struggle for the right to study on par with men. The meeting will focus on how the education system for girls was formed in the capital and why it became an important part of the city's history. The lecturer will offer a look at the past through the lens of schools and institutes where students were introduced to sciences, languages, and the rules of social life. Such a conversation will help to see how expectations of women's roles in society changed and what steps had to be taken to gain the right to knowledge. A separate block will be dedicated to closed educational institutions for girls, created after the model of the Smolny Institute, as well as private boarding schools, where education was only available to wealthy families. Where to go in St. Petersburg can be found on our website.
