About

17th-century churches, monastery walls, theatrical history, and traces of the Civil War come together to form a complex portrait of Yaroslavl. Architect Daniil Vedernikov will explain why the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery is often mistaken for a kremlin, how local architecture differs from Moscow's, and how the historical center was formed. One of the main narratives is related to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. Its walls and towers create the impression of a fortress, which is why the complex is often referred to as a kremlin. The lecturer will explain why this definition is historically inaccurate and how the monastery's territory differed from the urban defensive center. Particular attention will be given to the Yaroslavl architectural school of the 17th century and the development of the historical center, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The talk will include churches known from their depiction on the thousand-ruble banknote, the oldest theater in Russia, and addresses that usually remain outside the brief tourist program. Another important episode is the fate of Yaroslavl during the Civil War. The discussion of destruction and changes will help understand the price the city paid for the events of the 20th century and why preserving its architectural heritage is of special significance.
