Japanese fashion has long become more than a national tradition or a bright direction within the global industry. It astonishingly combines centuries-old crafts, a delicate relationship with fabric and the body, attention to imperfection, and a willingness for radical experimentation. That is why the conversation about it always goes beyond clothing as a set of items. It is a story about the philosophy of form, cultural memory, and how one aesthetic can change perceptions of beauty and modernity in different countries for decades. The lecture will discuss the broad trajectory of Japanese fashion - from traditional shibori and sashiko techniques to the revolution that Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto staged on the Paris runways in the 1980s. Listeners will be able to see how the logic of this path is structured: from kimono as a complex cultural system to the avant-garde that reassembled the very understanding of silhouette, volume, asymmetry, and the relationship between clothing and the body.
